Do you use iPlayer or 4oD to download TV programs?

The TVODMonitor has moved to its own site...click here to go to the new TVODMonitor site.

Hey! This is neat!thanks!. I load 4od and not worry about it using bandwidth.

thanks, I've been running it since I wrote it and it saves a lot of hassle. if you have any problems let me know, but I haven't had any...

Thanks for a great prog.
With 4OD I found that I downloaded 500MB and uploaded 3.76GB in a 24 hour period.

What the f***!!!!!!

I don't mind 1:1 or 1:2 sharing ratio but not 1:7. I hope this program solves this. ;-)

I know, it's crazy that there isn't any throttling. Obviously, with the monitor running it will still upload and download while you are using it. You just need to either end the iPlayer or 4oD application in the system tray when you are finished using it. You can also right-click on the monitor's TV icon on the system tray and click "Stop sharing now!".

Hi, I've just posted on my own blog complaining about the fact that iPlayer doesn't let you throttle the upload (like a proper Torrent client) and Sky Anytime doesn't even let you stop it. Will give this a try.

Question: does it monitor kservice or BBC/4od. i.e. will it also kill the upload when Sky Anytime quits?

It might work for Sky, I haven't tried it. Basically it monitors the front end, be it 4oD or iPlayer (or possibly Sky Anytime) and when that goes, it stops the sharing service in the background. I would be interested to hear if it works for Sky - if they use Kontiki, it should do...!

Hi there. I use both 4OD and iPlayer, and recently after having to run the repair utility for iPlayer I've started to get Kservice using 100% of my CPU which completely cripples my computer and means I can't use it for anything else. Unfortunately after installing and running BeebAnd4Monitor Kservice is still running at 100%. So er basically my question is: is BeebAnd4Monitor supposed to stop Kservice from running? Thanks

Hi there,

Great idea, but unfortunately I have an error when trying to start the application - are there uninstall / reinstall steps to proceed?

The application crashes with a .net framework error (running Windows Vista), 4od and BBC Iplayer on my machine...

'Unhandled exception has oocured in your application....'

'Cannot open Kservice service on computer '.'.

There is a whole description of the error but I cannot cut and paste it as it freezes up the panel - BandAnd4Mmonitor balloon seems to cycle with message 'checking for iplayer or 4od on startup'

This looks great - I will give it a try!!! I was not originally aware of this!!!

I assume Kservice does nothing if the files are moved to another directory or renamed?

I have been using 4oD and BBC iPlayer to download content which I then move to a shared director on a media server 2005 PC (the content is then watched on an xbox360 on the same network (as a media extender).

The thing that has really annoyed me is that since a recent upgrade C4 have somehow embedded their programmes with a tag that means that they can ONLY be played on the 4oD player (not Media Player) even if they are renamed.

Chris: The monitor doesn't throttle KService. KService needs to run when you are using 4oD, iPlayer or Sky otherwise you won't be able to watch anything. What the monitor will do is stop KService at startup and also stop it when you have closed 4oD and iPlayer. You can also right-click on it and just tell it to stop everything, by choosing "Stop sharing now!". It sounds to me like you might need to remove iPlayer and 4oD and reboot and reinstall, though.

Dan: Hmmm...it's hard to tell without the text of the message but it might be because the user that you are running as does not have administrative access to the PC. I haven't had any reports of problems on Vista, but then again, I don't know how many people are running it on Vista specifically. I am currently making a few changes to the program - I will add logging to the next release so that it generates a log file of all errors and maybe we can catch that one happening!

Anonymous: Windows Digital Rights Management, I guess. Channel 4 and the BBC have licencing rights to deal with I guess. I think the UK is pretty amazing, though, in that we can make so much content available for free. I don't know of any other country whose state media that has the same quality and choice available for free as the BBC.

Very nice idea. I downloaded and had a look and it works a treat - I will say that it seems kind of memory intensive for something that should be a pretty small program but I've got lots to spare :)

Phill, Thanks, nice to hear it's working for you! I am going to look at the memory usage and see if it can be improved, although it runs in about 14MB on my PC.

Works fine when running XP Pro SP2 but couldn't handle (error message & crash) Kservice.exe under Vista Home Premium.

With regards to the vista user. I am also a vista user and found that I got the same message.

By finding the actual application and going into the properties of the application, I set the program to Run as Administrator and this resolved the problem. I do however get a warning message on startup to make sure I want to run the program though, to get rid of that you would have to switch off the UAC.

To set the program to Run as Administrator:
1. Open the install folder, unless you have changed the name the folder you are typically looking for is called 7northfield and will be found in either the program files or program files (x86) folders. This opens the folder were the application is found.
2. Right-click the tvodmonitor and select properties.
3. Click on compatibility.
4. Where it says privilege level, check run this program as an administrator.
5. Click OK.
6. Open the application. You will get a UAC warning, click allow. This is the same warning you will get everytime you restart the PC.

If you wish to stop getting the error messages you will have to turn off the UAC (user account control) which is typically not recommended especially if there are multiple user accounts on the same PC.

I hope this helps, sorry it is long-winded.

Matt2: Yes, I guessed it was a permissions issue. There will be a way for the monitor to request permission to permanently run as administrator - I'll look into that, thanks, and thanks a lot for finding this solution!

Not a problem. It is I who should be thanking you for this very useful utility. Thanks

Hi, the application has installed fine and, would appear to be running OK. But, no matter what options I select when right-clicking the taskbar monitor icon, once my PC has booted up, kservice starts and the monitor says it is monitoring and sharing is ON!!!

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom
